Full-Rim Distance Glasses
Blurred Distance Vision
This happens when the focused image of a distant object is not positioned on the retina at the back of the eye. The blurred image formed is due to increasingly divergent light once it has passed through the incorrectly positioned focal point in front of the retina. A defect like this is because the eyeball shape has become slightly distorted as we have grown. Or the refractive power of the eye is too great, making the light rays converge to a focal point before the retina.
Myopia
Eye Shape
One form of myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the refracting components, mainly lens, is too strong compared to the length of the eyeball. Too great a refractive power for the length of the eyeball causes the focused distant image to fall short of the retina. Another form of myopia occurs when the eyeball has grown too long from front to back. Here, vision is better adapted for close objects as greater refractive power is required.
Symptom
Uncorrected myopia causes distant objects to be blurred. But there is a point in front of the eye at which an object can be brought into focus on the retina.
Corrective Lenses
Myopia is corrected using a concave lens. The concave lens shifts the focal point back onto the retina by diverging incident light. A concave (negative lens) placed in front of the eye diverges the light from the distant object. This negative lens has the effect reducing the strength of the eyes optical system.
Astigmatism
Cornea-Lens Shape
Another visual difficulty concerns the irregular curvature of the cornea and/or lens is called astigmatism. This occurs when the cornea or lens, instead of being a regular disc shape, has become approximately ‘rugby ball’ shaped. The result is that magnifying power in one direction is greater than in another.
Symptom
Blurring of lines at a particular angle can occur, seeing horizontal lines clearly but blurring of vertical lines. Blurring may also occur at a slant angle. This then requires that refractive correction is needed in a particular axis along the length of the ‘rugby ball’ anomaly.
Corrective Lenses
The correction for astigmatism is cylindrical lenses that are framed at a particular angle.
Distance Prescription
The table below shows sample values of the lenses needed to overcome myopia. The Sphere values shift the focal point back onto the retina. The Cylinder and Axis values correct for astigmatism at an angle corresponding to the slanting defect line in the cornea-lens shape.

Our Range
We provide a range of distance glasses that are made by our optics technician who has around 50 years of experienmce in the optics field. Because single vision distance lenses are more likely to be worn for longer periods, we can offer a range of thinner lenses to reduce the weight of the glasses. These increased index lenses are available on request. If you are struggling to read road signs whilst driving, then you probably need distance glasses urgently.
